26th June of every year is a day set aside by the United Nations as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Several civil society organizations, NGO’s,ministries, departments and agencies of governments commemorate this day by organizing activities to educate people on issues related to drugs and substance use.
On this background, Youth Rescue International Development Organization (YRIDO) organized a youth based town hall meeting and road march in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Nigeria on Friday 26th June 2015 to commemorate the day. The project was designed to educate people especially youths resident in Port Harcourt, Rivers State about the harmful effects of drugs and substance abuse. The colorful event featured Discussions, Q&As, Live Drama and a hundred man Street March to sensitize the public as well. The theme of the day as internationally accepted is ‘SUPPORT. DON’T PUNISH’. This theme guided the activities, discussions, paper inscriptions and drama performances of the day.According to the global theme of the day, we used the event to beckon on stakeholders to see the need to support addicted drug users through rehabilitation and effective counseling rather than inflicting more pain on them by means of torture, jailing or even executing them. The response from attendees of the town hall meeting and observers on the streets we passed during the march was phenomenal. We had in the meeting people with real experiences and history of drug addiction who shared their story—how they got into taking drugs and how they were able to come out of it. Those that came for the meeting went back with expressions of great satisfaction for the wealth of knowledge they gathered.
