Owing to the high patronage and popularity that negative news enjoys in our society, VOC News media crew (Emmanuel Kalu, Austin Edoho, and Blessing Kalu) went out to the streets to hear what people had to say on this vexed issue of negativity in Nigerian news reportage. Here is what Nigerians had to say:
I don’t even listen to news because all you hear or read is about corrupt politicians. So what’s the essence of listening to it?
Negative news make people happy because the event happened to someone else, and not to them! This is nothing but the selfish nature in man!
Negative news trends more than positive news. Journalists make more money from the negative
People want to hear about the negative aspect of something.Even when Jesus was to be crucified, people preferred Barnabas who was a criminal,to Jesus who was a good man. so people will always prefer bad to good!
People are more interested in things that are more newsworthy. People love reading stories that threatens lives in order to be more careful about their own lives.
Negative news is interesting to listen to.Very sweet. Positive news is very boring and dull.
I don’t like listening to negative news, but I think other people enjoy doing that. It attracts more attention, and is more interesting. They believe positive news is old story!
Negative news flies faster, and people love gossips, hearsays, and rumour. They just want to hear that something negative happened to someone.
The problem is with the journalists who specialize in reporting negative happenings in the society because they want to attract readership, viewership, or large listening audience as the case may be.When journalists stop writing negative stories, the public will stop reading negative stories!
